Mona Rahimi is a computer scientist specializing in AI-based software engineering, AI engineering, software evolution, requirements engineering, and safety assurance. She holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Notre Dame, where she completed her doctoral studies from 2012 to 2017. Prior to that, she earned a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from Southern Illinois University from 2009 to 2011.
Currently, Dr. Rahimi serves as an Assistant Professor at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL, a position she has held since 2019. Before joining Northern Illinois University, she worked as a Research Associate at the University of Toronto in Canada from 2018 to 2019 and as a Lecturer at DePaul University in Chicago, IL from 2017 to 2018. Throughout her career, Dr. Rahimi has received several grants and awards to support her research. Notably, she received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for transformative research and a grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) for automated evolution of software’s robustness. Dr. Rahimi has published extensively in prestigious conferences and journals.
Her research work includes topics such as black-box evaluation of AI-enabled software systems, software evolution visualization, dataset requirements evaluation for AI-enabled software, and improving the generalizability of machine learning-enabled software. Her publications have appeared in IEEE/ACM conferences and reputable journals like Elsevier Journal of Software & Systems and Requirements Engineering Journal. In addition to her research contributions, Dr. Rahimi actively participates in the academic community. She serves as a Journal Editor for the Journal of Science of Computer Programming (SCP) and has held various roles in organizing and chairing international conferences and workshops. She has also served on program committees and review panels for prestigious conferences and funding agencies.
Within her university, Dr. Rahimi engages in various activities, including mentoring research students, serving on committees, and participating in interdisciplinary collaborations. She is involved in initiatives related to innovative teaching and learning, tuition waiver reviews, and promoting diversity and women’s representation in STEM. Dr.
